Layrd Life: March 2024

We're thrilled to present the second instalment of Layrd Life! In March, our commitment to continuous learning and collaboration took centre stage. We actively participated in industry events like PerformX and ISC, expanding our network within the fitness and sports design landscape. We connected with suppliers both in and out of the studio and had another great meetup at Sketch & Social.

PerformX

Held at Tobacco Dock, PerformX is an event for industry leaders, gym owners, and PTs showcasing innovative knowledge, technologies, products, and services. It was a collaborative effort from our team to set up the day before the event. We got hands-on applying our stand graphics from CIM Signs & Graphics, setting up our sample wall and assembling our feature lighting supplied by LED Snaps. The space boasted a bold look and feel with natural textures and warm, earthy tones. We prioritized sustainability by reusing existing materials, incorporating breakout furniture and planting from the studio.

This was our first time at PerformX and our first gym exhibition of the year. We're looking forward to exhibiting at more fitness events in the coming months.

International Sports Convention

March is also the first time we exhibited at The International Sports Convention, an event connecting individuals and companies in the business of sport at Tottenham Stadium. We designed our stand for impact with standout graphics and worked around bold imagery from Stadia projects at Ipswich Town Football Club and Cambridge United. ISC was a great opportunity to network with professionals in the sports industry and elevate our name with a statement space.

esPattio Lunch and Learn

esPattio is a Forma 5 brand that designs stimulating, cosy and contemporary furniture inspired by Seville's timeless style. They promote human-centred design principles that bring colour and warmth into daily working life. We recently had a lunch and learn in the Layrd studio to update our interior designers on upcoming collections and give our newer team members a deeper introduction to their product range. We regularly specify both esPattio and Forma 5 products on projects across our sectors, but staying up to date with suppliers helps to expand our designers' knowledge for upcoming projects.

HRC Show

HRC is the ultimate business event for the UK hospitality industry, with over 1,500 suppliers across hospitality equipment, furniture, interiors and technology. The event hosted talks on 2024 interior trends in hospitality, which gave designer Eleanor Penny some valuable insights into sustainability, inclusivity and maximalist design. Her key takeaway is that the hospitality industry seems to be following in the footsteps of other sectors and finally moving away from fast furniture.

Sketch & Social

Sketch & Social's March theme was 'shared dreamscapes'. This meetup was inspired by the nonsensical feel of dreams with sketchers working in groups to produce shared artwork. Attendees continually added to each other's drawings, which resulted in wildly creative outcomes. Our Sketch & Social events usually foster so many new connections, but this month's event, by nature, was even more collaborative than usual. It was a fantastic way to meet some new Cambridge creatives.

Spring Planting at Allsfar

Layrd Studio Manager, Emily Gray, attended an Allsfar planting workshop at their London showroom and returned with a lovely plant for our office. Allsfar provided acoustic planters and Oasis Plants brought the biophilia to work with. The evening was filled with talks from the hosts alongside Material Bank and Lavoro Design. It was lovely to meet more of the Allsfar team and engage in stimulating conversations with London-based professionals.

Solus Introduction

Solus Ceramics visited the Layrd Design studio in March for a lunch and learn, talking us through their tiling collections, product performance and past projects. We love being able to physically see and feel samples to understand how we might implement different textures and colours into projects. It's wonderful to connect with suppliers and have the opportunity to ask questions to ensure our projects run smoothly.

International Women's Day

One of our highlights from March was the opportunity to attend a walk with the Leading Ladies in Construction for International Women's Day. Our team is proud to employ so many women in the design and construction industry, where, typically, women only make up 15% of the workforce. We look forward to continuing to support this organisation and to participate in conversations that seriously impact the industry.

March has been another exciting month at Layrd Design. We've made new connections, learned about the latest trends, and expanded our knowledge of products and services. We're looking forward to seeing what April has in store!
