Meet the team: Emily Gray

Get to know our new Studio Manager, Emily Gray, and learn more about her experience and what she’s looking forward to in the role.

Can you tell us a little bit about your previous experience?

I’ve had a varied background because I’ve been figuring out where I want to go in my career. In previous years I worked for a dancewear company in a sales and PA role with marketing and event organisation included. I’ve also done lots of administrative work, including for a construction company.

Most recently, I worked for a mental health company, which was really interesting but unfortunately there wasn’t really any room for progression. That’s when I found this position I'd been searching for at Layrd Design.

What does your role at Layrd Design involve?

The role is extremely varied and continually developing. At the moment the job is focused on event planning, mainly for the Future Spaces events we run. I've also been dealing with sales and marketing frameworks and assisting with company processes.

The team have named me the “Office Mum” for looking after everyone and the studio. I organise and arrange any visits or meetings at the studio, deliveries and any additional events, either which we are hosting or attending. Finally, I’m helping Will Mayes with other business-related activities, while also attending meetings and frequent networking events.

What does a typical day look like?

Every day is very different! It really depends on what is needed for that particular day or week. For instance, I’ve recently been doing a lot of work writing submissions for awards. I’ve also been doing a lot of work for the next Future Spaces event. It’s very varied!

Why did you want to work for Layrd Design?

I’ve always been creative and an artistic person. I’m not a designer, but I make my own clothes and I’ve always wanted to work within a creative environment. I’ve been in working environments where there wasn’t any creativity, so I started making soy wax candles and reed diffusers to sell on Etsy. I actually made some for the salon Douce, which was designed by Layrd Design!

Now Layrd Design is channelling more of my creativity, which is exciting.

I love the ethos and culture at Layrd Design and I'm so pleased to be a part of the growing team.

What’s your favourite part of the job?

The team!! Everyone is absolutely lovely and the team culture is great, I’m so pleased to be a part of Layrd Design. The studio transformation which is currently happening is all very exciting and I’m enjoying getting stuck in with the organisation of everything.

What are you most looking forward to once you’ve fully settled in?

I’m most looking forward to the events, particularly Future Spaces. I really enjoy working towards an event and making sure it all goes well and smoothly. We’ve also got lots of other events coming up, such as the Meet Your Neighbour networking event in our building. As an additional part of these events, we will be hosting our own Open Studio event in our newly finished space.
