PowerWatts

PowerWatts approached Layrd Design to deliver their first flagship cycling studio in Brighton, bringing together performance training, retail and café culture under one roof. Designed as a blueprint for future locations, the 520 sqm space translates the PowerWatts brand identity into a physical environment that celebrates cycling and the community surrounding it.

Creating the Flagship Studio

Located in Brighton, the new studio transformed a shell and core unit into a high-performance indoor cycling space with integrated café, retail and changing facilities.

The layout brings together a dedicated cycle studio, bike fit and consultation spaces, changing facilities and a bike repair zone, creating a fully considered environment for both performance and everyday cyclists.

The multifunctional layout allows visitors to flow easily between training, socialising and engaging with the PowerWatts brand, whether moving from a class to the café, or exploring the retail, creating a space that supports both fitness and lifestyle.

Translating the Brand

Colours and finishes were chosen to reflect the PowerWatts identity through a clean, modern aesthetic with subtle, thoughtful industrial influences. Durable materials were carefully selected to meet the practical demands of a cycling studio while still creating visual impact.

Cleat-friendly flooring, including LVT tiles from Shaw Contract, ensures the space performs as well as it looks, while integrated metal wall storage and floor systems for bikes create a sleek and streamlined environment.

Across the café, retail and consultation areas, a consistent material language ties the space together, balancing function with a strong visual identity. A bold yellow stripe running throughout the interior references cycling lanes, with signage and artwork reinforcing the brand’s values and personality.

To achieve the studio’s Scandi-industrial aesthetic in the cafe, we partnered with Designers Touch to source a collection of café ware, carefully selected to reflect the interior material palette and enhance the overall experience. Japanese-inspired crockery introduces a modern, minimalist edge, while matte black cutlery and industrial stainless steel details reinforce the scheme. Natural finishes, including simple glassware and warm wooden trays, add softness and balance, elevating the everyday coffee ritual.

A hub for the cycling community

More than just a fitness studio, the space was designed to reflect the social culture surrounding cycling.

From high-energy sessions in the cycle studio to quieter moments in the café or consultation spaces, the environment supports a range of experiences for both keen and casual cyclists.

Whether attending a class, browsing the retail space , visiting the bike repair zone or stopping in for a coffee and pastry, the studio offers a welcoming hub for Brighton’s cycling community.
