Riverlane
Layrd Design partnered with Riverlane, an innovative quantum computing firm based in central Cambridge, to design their workplace across two distinct project phases. The goal was to transform their existing office into a dynamic space that supports growth, encourages collaboration, and reflects their cutting-edge work in quantum technology.

In summer 2021, we completed the first phase of interior design, project management and full furniture fit-out. The brief was to create a modern, creative and comfortable office for a fast-growing team. The design introduced flexible meeting rooms with folding whiteboard walls, soft breakout zones, acoustic wall panels, a moss feature wall and vibrant LED signage to bring the brand to life. A key part of the scheme was the café-style lunch room, a warm, inviting area with natural textures and varied seating designed to help employees truly step away from their desks.
We furnished the workspace with sit-stand desks, ergonomic Orangebox Eva task chairs, Boss Design soft seating, and versatile furniture that could adapt as the team evolved.

Phase Two: Scaling Up, Staying Grounded
As Riverlane expanded, they returned to Layrd to take the design further in 2023 — this time with a clear vision to mark their next chapter. Phase two focused on expanding their footprint while embedding stronger visual identity and elevating the welcome experience.
At the heart of the new reception is a bespoke ply wall, inspired by the vibrant energy of computer chips. Built by Lark Valley Woodcraft and brought to life with integrated LEDs, it sets the tone for a bold, forward-facing workplace. Alongside this, an electric glass wall by Komfort Partitioning showcases abstract visuals of quantum computing systems, adding depth and intrigue. Signage throughout was delivered in partnership with CIM Signs & Graphics.

From bold materials to future-focused layouts, this project captures the speed and spirit of a fast-scaling tech company.

From meeting pods to relaxed lounges, each element was curated to support productivity, inclusion and employee wellbeing.
As Riverlane grew, so did the diversity of working styles and needs. Our design response embraced this by weaving in spaces for deep focus and quiet, as well as soft areas for informal conversation and collaboration.
Acoustic treatments were applied across open-plan areas and enclosed rooms to reduce distractions, while biophilic design remained a core thread, with planters, soft textures and large-scale greenery provided by Plant Plan, helping to create a more comfortable, human workplace.

Working with Layrd Design was a pleasure from start to finish. Will took time to understand our brief and returned with a stunning yet practical design for our new offices.
They project managed the whole installation, communicated clearly with us throughout, and we have a fabulous new space, designed to encourage collaboration and innovation among our technical teams.
