Queens College

Layrd Design partnered with Regent Construction in the summer of 2021 to redesign and fit out The Armitage Rooms at Queens’ College. Set within one of the university’s historic colleges, the brief was to transform a dated and disjointed suite into a flexible, contemporary environment where students could study, collaborate and host events.

The space needed to support both individual focus and group activity. Just as importantly, the design had to feel modern while remaining sensitive to the character of its architectural setting.

The Armitage Rooms Queens College

To improve flow and functionality, we opened up the previously closed-off rooms and introduced a more open-plan layout. Suspended ceiling tiles were removed and replaced with acoustic fins to improve sound and visual quality. Bespoke bookcases now line the perimeter of the room, creating a smart and functional backdrop that complements the room’s proportions and original features.

The result is a more inviting, adaptable space that reflects the way students work today while staying true to the history around it.

Furniture was chosen with flexibility and comfort in mind. We supplied everything, including folding tables from Boss Design, ergonomic task chairs from Senator, individual study booths and high-backed acoustic seating.

A space dedicated to its users

Students can flex easily between quiet solo work, informal meetings and larger group sessions without losing its sense of coherence.

We collaborated with Tarkett Flooring to specify a hardwearing, low-maintenance flooring scheme that would also deliver on sustainability. Airmaster carpet tiles define the working zones, while a timber-effect LVT guides users from the entrance through to the tea point, creating a clear sense of movement through the space.

We’re proud to support the next generation of learners by creating spaces that inspire focus, collaboration and wellbeing. If you're planning an education project, we’d love to help bring it to life.
